A parable, with homework

Duty & Delight as Co-Pilots

A road-trip parable about doing what God says — and a worksheet for getting unstuck.

Imagine you are a back-seat passenger in a car headed out on a long road trip. You won't be driving — indeed, you won't even be in the front seats — and that's okay. You have work to do and could certainly catch up on some sleep.

You have two people driving on this road trip. One is Mr. Duty, and the other is Mrs. Delight.

They are a married couple, and though they are quite different, they have managed to work together for many years. In fact, they have one of the best and most productive marriages you know about.

Although it must be said, they have very different driving styles. Mr. Duty is very serious and a bit less capable of driving for long stretches because he's very careful. Frankly, he doesn't really like to drive, but he's got this massive sense of responsibility (see his name), and he's good at it. It's just that it feels a bit more tedious when he drives.

Mrs. Delight is a blast to ride with. She drives a little zippier and can go much longer without having to stop because she actually just enjoys driving. She's always got a playlist figured out and has a bag of snacks ready to go. The only problem is that there are times when she just doesn't want to drive and refuses altogether.

Would it be better if Mrs. Delight were willing and able to drive all the time? Of course! But that's not an option. Thankfully, you have Mr. Duty, who has strengths that perfectly complement Mrs. Delight's weaknesses. All told, it's a pretty good setup.

Now, do you understand what I'm getting at here? God has given you places to be, things to do, and so on. From little things like spending time with Him in prayer every day to big things like getting married and raising kids and working a career and so forth.

When Mrs. Delight is willing to drive you into these things, then you're going to enjoy it much more than when Mr. Duty does. But in spite of all of her many strengths, Mrs. Delight is a bit of a flake. Yeah, I know she's your favorite, but let's be honest, she's a bit of a flake. And Mr. Duty isn't your favorite, but one thing can be said for him: he always shows up when he's needed.

So there you go. This is almost everything in your life. Identify what God tells you to do. See if you can get Mrs. Delight to drive you there. If not, put Mr. Duty behind the wheel and get on down the road. Most of the time, you'll find Mrs. Delight soon getting interested in the trip and feeling up for taking over.

What you write stays on this device. Nothing is stored online and nothing is sent anywhere — unless you choose to share your finished worksheet with Pastor Chris, which emails it to him directly and still stores nothing.
